Baker Hughes is making headlines. The company recently took home World Oil’s Best Well Intervention Award for SENTIO™, a downhole data acquisition tool. The company not only took home top honors, but placed eight finalists covering the full spectrum of drilling, formation evaluation, completion and production. Other Baker Hughes finalists included the FracPoint™ multistage openhole completion technology, Kymera™ hybrid drilling fluid technology, OMNI-PACK™ invert emulsion gravel pack carrier fluid, MICRO-PRIME™ high efficiency wellbore cleaning spacer system, RT eXplorer™ instrument, KHI+CI™ inhibitor, and integrated real-time well planning, reservoir navigation & earth modeling system. The SENTIO downhole data acquisition tool enables drilling optimization through an array of sensors that sample critical well intervention process parameters. A digital signal processor analyzes all data streams simultaneously at a high-data rate and outputs static measurements and computed diagnostics. The outputs are prioritized into a job-specific data sequence and transmitted to a rig-floor display screen and, if desired, to a remote real-time operations center. This feedback about the downhole environment provides a new level of intervention process control. Immediate remedial actions can be taken by changing job parameters and, more importantly, the entire well-intervention process can be safely optimized. “The most important part of this technology - and why it’s a step change for well intervention - is that we are able to get real-time information of the downhole operation. Historically, we relied on the tools coming to surface and making an interpretation if success was made. With real-time information, we are able to make changes on our operational parameters while in hole,” says Vaughn Griffin, wellbore intervention product line director for Baker Hughes. Griffin explains that Baker Hughes is applying SENTIO in Norway in its section milling work. “In this application, we have been using new technology cutters and have doubled or tripled the amount of footage milled per set of cutters. Using SENTIO’s real-time data, we have been able to closely monitor downhole equivalent circulating density (ECD) well characteristics to prevent well losses, resulting in huge savings for an operator in Norway.” Read more about SMART Intervention.
